Dosh, Wedge, Quid And Wonger!

Otherwise known as Money and the reason why most of us play the lottery!

There are lots of slang words for money and the title of this post names just a few that are used in the UK.  Most have some sort of interesting history or reason why they are used, with many originating from London with cockney rhyming slang.

Most of the slang terms used for money started a long time ago usually before decimalisation which came into force in 1971.

Some slang terms refer to an actual amount of money such as

  • Archer = £2000
  • Ayrton Senna =£10
  • Biscuit =£100
  • Monkey =£500
  • Plum =£100,000
  • Pony =£25
  • Rhino =£250
  • Squid =£1
  • Mill=£1000,000
  • Grand =£1000

There are many many more of course like there must be other reasons to play the lottery such as to help good causes for maybe even some of us play the lottery just for fun but for me, like the majority of us I play for a cock and hen or a carpet or a bunce….

If you have anymore interesting slang terms for money from around the world, we would love to hear them especially if you know the origins of the term!
